Hey PALCS, did you know today is Pi Day? No, we are not talking about your mother’s famous cherry pie or the award-winning apple pie from the diner down the street. We are referring to pi, π, the sweetest irrational number out there. Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter or, as you may recognize it, 3.14 or 22/7. Just as pi approximates to 3.14, March 14th equals 3/14, which has become an annual celebration of the number that never ends.

Earlier this year, we had the opportunity to meet the PALCS High School Math Department, who will surely be celebrating today. Join us in wishing all math teachers a happy pi day! They have collected a few useful links about the day: activities and information from the Exploratorium, and well as three YouTube videos about pi day: pi day video 1; pi day video 2; pi day video 3.

Here at PALCS, we take full advantage of celebrating this day each year, with teachers and staff bringing in a delicious variety and large quantities of pie!

Share in the celebration by sharing a slice of your favorite pie with a friend and taking time to discuss how math impacts your life, including the never ending number that has inspired this yearly celebration.
