If you are having trouble hearing sound out of your computer (or if the sound is too loud,) you need to check the volume control on both your audio device itself (like a headset or speakers,) as well as settings on your computer.
Step One: Adjusting the Volume on your Headset or Speakers
- Before adjusting, always double check that your headset/speakers are plugged into the "Headset" our "Audio Out" port--not the microphone port!
- If you have speakers, you may have a knob on one or both of the speakers; if using a headset, you will see a round slider in the middle of your headset cord. Move this knob/slider closer toward the + instead of the - in order to turn up the volume.
Step Two: Adjusting the Volume on your Computer
- Single-click the Volume icon on the Taskbar (it looks like a grey, conical speaker.) This opens the Master Volume Slider. Slide toward the top to increase volume; double check that Mute is not checked.
- If you still cannot hear, double-click the Volume icon on the Taskbar to open the Volume Control Settings window.
Note: If you do not see the volume icon on the Taskbar:
- Click Start
- Choose Control Panel
- Click Sounds and Audio Devices
- On the volume tab, place a check mark beside "Place volume icon in the Taskbar." If your computer says "No Audio Device Installed," see troubleshooting, below.
- Click Apply, and then click OK. The Volume icon appears in the Taskbar.
- Volume Control, on the left, is the Master Volume. Slide that up. Also, slide up "Wave," which is the type of most sounds coming out of your computer.
- When you are satisfied with the sound level, click the X to close the window.
Troubleshooting
If the Sounds and Audio Devices Menu in Control Panel says "No Audio Device Installed," your comptuer may have the wrong sound output device settings.
Check the Audio Tab in Sounds and Audio Devices and make sure that SoundMAX or Real97 Digital Audio is selected for Sound Playback and Sound Recording - not a modem. Then select Apply and OK and try the above steps again.
