Mouse/Keyboard not Working

If you have a round-shaped plug for your mouse or keyboard (a PS/2 plug,) please call the Help Desk at 1-877-PALCS-TLC.

If you have a rectangular-shaped USB plug, when setting up your computer for the first time or after reimaging your sytem, it is likely that it will not work.  This is because your computer tower does not know or remember that it is supposed to look for and recognize your mouse/keyboard.

To solve this problem:

  1. Unplug all rectangular USB plugs from your computer.  In addition to your mouse/keyboard, make sure you have not plugged in your printer or webcam.

  2. Turn off your computer, with all USB devices unplugged.  If you cannot use your mouse or keyboard to do this, push and hold the power button on your computer tower for 10 seconds until it turns off.
Note: When your computer is off, double-check that there are NOT any lights on or flashing near the power button.  If there are, please unplug your computer tower, push the power button while unplugged to reset the tower, then plug the tower in again.

  3. Turn your computer back on, continuing to leave all USB devices unplugged.

  4. Once your computer starts up, plug in your mouse first into a DIFFERENT USB port on your computer tower than you had it previously (if your mouse works, but your keyboard is the problem, plug in your keyboard at this point.)  Then WAIT.  Your computer may take several minutes to recognize your device.  This is normal.  You should receive a popup that your computer has found new hardware and, eventually, that your hardware is installed and ready to use.  Your mouse should now be functional.

  5. If you additionally have trouble with your keyboard, plug it in after your mouse has been recognized.
