Accessing the Internet

Trouble accessing ALL web pages

If you have a high-speed Internet connection and you cannot access anything on the Internet (ex: your school computer "times out" or "cannot find" http://www.palcs.org OR http://www.google.com,) here are some basic tips:

  1. Double check ALL connections (power to modem, modem to computer) and make sure everything is turned on and plugged in.

  2. Then turn everything off, unplug the power to all devices, wait 30 seconds, and turn them back on again, one by one.  Start with the modem (the box provided by your Internet Service Provider, like Comcast or Verizon,) then your router (if you have one: it splits your Internet connection across multiple computers.  It may be a wireless access point,) then your finally computer tower.

  3. Go to Start, then Control Panel, then Network Connections.  Using a wired connection, make sure your "Local Area Connection" is Connected (it should say "Connected" in light grey.)  If not, right-click on the Local Area Connection and select "Repair."

  4. If, when trying to access the Internet, you receive a screen asking for a username/password, it may be our Filterpak.  The username is student, the password is login (see topic: The Filterpak.)

  5. If your connection is still not working, your Internet Service Provider may be having trouble.  Call your ISP.

Trouble accessing some, but not all websites (like Moodle, palcs.org, Compass, etc.)
