Tips and Tricks: The Desktop

In order to use Microsoft Windows more effectively, it helps to know the names of various items and tools on the desktop.  The image below illustrates the parts of the desktop:

 

Cleaning the Desktop

Sometimes the Desktop can become cluttered with too many icons - making it difficult to find things or displaying icons you never use.  You can remove these icons with the Desktop Cleanup Utility.

  1. Click Start > Control Panel, then double-click on Display. 
  2. Click the Desktop tab, then the Customize Desktop button.  Click Cean Desktop Now.
  3. Click the Next button, then put checkmarks next to icons you wish to remove from your desktop.  Uncheck icons you wish to keep on your desktop.  Click Next and Finish.
  4. All checked icons will now appear in an "Unused Desktop Shortcuts" folder on your desktop.
