Ann Shapiro
Technical Theatre, Puppetry, and Creative Writing Teache

“I believe that art is essential to knowledge, to understanding and therefore to life. The arts in all of their forms inspire, drive, and contribute to everything from literature to mathematics. From the rhythmic patterns of poetry to the complex art created by the graphing of equations, art is in everything.”
Ann Shapiro was born and raised in Columbia, Maryland, a suburb in between Baltimore and Washington DC. She attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where as favor to her employer she first discovered her passion for working behind the scenes in the theater. She dove into technical theater with both hands, learning all that she could in multiple disciplines including scenery, lighting, costuming and sound as well as studying dramaturgy and creative writing. After her graduation with a Bachelor of Arts she moved to New York City to work in theatre and write.
Ann then attended Tulane University in New Orleans and completed a Master of Fine Arts in Sound and Lighting Design and Technology. She has recently completed a Master of Science in Secondary English Education and received her Pennsylvania State Teaching certification.
She teaches creative writing, backstage technology, Shakespeare studies and puppetry.
