PALCS Teacher Named one of Nation's Most Innovative at Library of Congress in Washington DC
Lisa Quinn, teacher of the PALCS Leadership Program, was one of twelve educators honored at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC on the evening of Wednesday, June 6. The gala was to present the "2007 Cable's Leaders in Learning Award," created by Cable in the Classroom, the national education foundation of the US cable industry.
Quinn was honored for organizing the March 2007 Millennium Ambassadors Program trip of twenty-two 8th - 12th grade students to Panama, where they lived with, learned from and taught Ngobe Bugle Indians. For doing so, Quinn received the "Pushing the Envelope with Cable Technology and Programming" award, specifically for the use of broadband Internet connectivity connected to PALCS. Only two educators in the nation win this annual award.
Click here to visit the Awards' website and view the other eleven winners of these prestigious awards. Images and large, broadcast-ready videos of the event are also available.

PALCS Near Space Balloon Launch: Ready, Set and waiting to Go!
Mr. Alan Hutto and Ms. Yassara Antar, teachers at the PA Leadership Charter School, with Mr. Harry Bryant and other volunteers from the New Jersey Battleship Amateur Radio Club will be launching the second PALCS Near Space Balloon from the Samuel S. Lewis State Park near Wrightsville, PA on Friday, May 4th, 2007 at approximately 9:00 am.
The 10 foot diameter helium balloon and payload containing scientific, photography, amateur television, and amateur radio tracking equipment is expected to reach an altitude of 90,000 to 100,000 feet where the balloon will burst and the payload will descend by parachute back to Earth. The balloon and payload are currently projected to travel as many as 92 miles southeast of the launch position. Current flight projections can be viewed here.
Students and individuals near the ground track of the balloon's flight path will be able to tune in to channel 59 on the VHF TV (not cable or satellite) channels to view the feed from an onboard camera. Everyone will be able to follow the progress of the PALCS Near Space Balloon via the Web by going to http://map.findu.com/nj2bb-11.
Information, videos, and pictures from last year's flight can be accessed via http://the.captain.al.googlepages.com.
Launch day updates and tracking information can be found at http://palcsnearspaceballoon.blogspot.com/.
Individuals who use RSS feed readers or Firefox can receive RSS feed updates to the Update Tracking Blog here.
Students and interested individuals can still send their names to near space! After successful recovery of the payload, individuals will be sent a commemorative certificate with the date and vital statistics of the flight. The form can be found here.

PALCS University Scholars Students take three out of four scholarship prizes
On Saturdays April 21st, the PALCS Debate Team competed in a debate tournament sponsored by Perspectives Debate Inc. -- a nonprofit organization promoting youth debate education.
Students prepare to debate both sides to a resolve. This resolve for this tournament was “Establishing a safe educational environment in grades K-12 justifies the infringement of student civil liberties.” Students compete in three rounds and their points for each round are totaled. Awards were given for public speaking skills as well as debate.
$20,000 in college scholarships and trophies were awarded to the top four finishers.
The PALCS Debate Team, composed of University Scholars students: Bucky Kellorgg, Alex Koren, Dan Lee, Matt Paden, Andrew Pitts, and Lydia Reyle did phenomenally well.
Alex Koren (first place debate)
Andrew Pitts (second place debate, first place public speaking)
Bucky Kellorgg (fourth place debate)
Lydia Reyle (fourth place public speaking)
Koren, Pitts and Kellorgg each received $5,000 college scholarships as well as trophies. Koren and Pitts also won $150.00 each.

PALCS Balloon Project Puts Students in Touch with Near-Space
The PALCS Near-Space Balloon (see news item below from 5-26-06) will fly high again this school year - but things are more personal this time around. The balloon will carry both science projects and names of people connected with PALCS to around 95,000 feet above the Earth.
On June 10, 2006, Blanchard I, the first PALCS Near-Space Balloon, was retreived from a tree near the Pennsylvania-Maryland border about five hours after lift-off. Though it only reached approximately 20,000 feet due to windy conditions, it did manage to obtain interesting photographs and was considered an overall successful launch. See the website for last year's launch here.
This year, PALCS students are encouraged to create their own small science experiments to include on the balloon's trip to near-space. Aside from a few regulations, students are allowed to be creative and try to find out anything from polutants in the upper atmosphere to the effects of low pressure on a marshmallow.
Also, PALCS families and friends are allowed to submit their names for a list that will be flown to Near-Space. Upon the return of the balloon's payload, the namesake will receive a certificate and flight statistics.
More information about the project can be found here.
