Announcing the "launch" of the PALCS Near Space Balloon Project

The Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School science department will launch a high altitude balloon on June 10, 2006.  The balloon, named "Blanchard I," will lift off at 9:00 AM from Samuel S. Lewis State Park, near Wrightsville, PA.

When Blanchard I reaches an altitude of 85,000 – 90,000 feet, its purpose will be to take photographs of the earth's curvature and the "blackness" of space.  PALCS will partner with the Battleship New Jersey Amateur Radio Station in order to track the path of Blanchard I in real-time during its two to five hour journey into the stratosphere.

Students will not only get to watch the scientific method in action, but they will also be able to participate at every level in the experiment. Project heads Mr. J. Alan Hutto and Ms. Yassara Antar, both PALCS science teachers, hope that after this successful launch, many more will come in the future - with the possibility that PALCS students may even lead the operation.

Everyone is welcome to come and see the launch, but, for those unable to attend, it will available as a live webcast.

PALCS premieres The Talon, our online school newspaper!

Friday, September 16, 2006 marks the date of the first edition of The Talon, PA Leadership Charter School's online school newspaper.

Ms. Erin Keefe, advisor of The Talon and PALCS high school English teacher, explains that 25 high school students will brainstorm, research, write, revise and post articles for The Talon.  The paper will include sports, opinion, and recurring columns on issues both external and internal to the school.

"They probably will never all meet in person; nor will they work together in a typical newsroom. Perhaps this will be the paper’s greatest strength. It will be a challenge to create this publication from various locations all over the state of Pennsylvania, but one that will create the leaders and inspire the critical thinking that this school, in its mission, aims to promote," says Keefe.

The newspaper can be viewed here: http://my.highschooljournalism.org/pa/frazer/palcs/
