University Scholar Wins Spelling Bee; Heads to National Competition

On Friday, February 27, 2009, University Scholars Program participant, Ralph Lawton, who won the University Scholars Scripps Spelling Bee, competed in the Chester County Scripps Spelling Bee. The winner of this County Bee, sponsored by the Daily Local News, heads to Washington D.C. to compete in the National Spelling Bee, May 26-28.

Competing against 52 other students in grades 4, 5, 6, 7, & 8, (though most were in 7th & 8th) Ralph placed in the top six by spelling words such as accommodate, firmament, panglossian, alexia, and kestrel.

Ralph, congratulations on a job well spelled!

PALCS is taking enrollment orientations on the road (again!)

We are coming to a town near you to enroll your student. Please mail your enrollment packet in today so we can sign you up for one of our locations. Seating is limited so it is important to get your packet in soon. Orientations will begin at 12:00 Noon. After your enrollment packet is mailed to us, you will receive a call to confirm.

PALCS Teacher saves Student during Robbery

Ariel Rivera, 10th grade PALCS student, used quick thinking when she sent her Spanish teacher, Ms. Balog, an instant message last week. Ariel's Moodle message saved her from a life-threatening situation.

Debate Title Goes to PALCS Student

Alex Koren, a member of the University Scholars Debate Team, won the 34th annual Liberty Bell Classic debate tournament at the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday, October 19. He defeated a student from the Bronx High School of Science.

In addition to building his own arguments, Alex also helps to coach his teammates with their Lincoln-Douglas debate skills.

Congratulations Alex and thank you for continuing to help build our team's skills!

PALCS Students Receive Honors from the College Board

The following University Scholars Program participants received prestigious recognition from the College Board.

The AP Scholar with Distinction Award went to: Monica Watson - Class of 2009.

The AP Scholar with Honor Award went to: Alexander Koren - Class of 2009 & Lydia Reyle - Class of 2009.

The AP Scholar Award went to: Christina Celona - Class of 2008, Hannah Daly - Class of 2008, & Andrew Pitts - Class of 2010.

Enrollment for Juniors Reaches Capacity, enters Lottery Stage


PALCS has reached its capacity for Grade 11 students. Therefore, students submitting enrollment packets will now be placed on the Grade 11 waiting list and will be enrolled by lottery as space becomes available. All packets received by the end of the day today (9/17) will be continue to be processed.

Two PALCS National Merit Semifinalists Named

Congratulations to seniors Daniel Lee and Nathaniel MacArthur for being named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists.

Semifinalists are selected from over 1.5 million entrants each year based on their scores on the PSAT/NMSQT. Daniel and Nathaniel will now compete in a pool of 16,000 semifinalists to become finalists in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. In February, 15,000 finalists will be named. Of those, 8,200 will receive scholarships.

Enrollment for Seniors Closing

In order to best meet the needs of our students, enrollment is closing for seniors effective September 30, 2008. All pending students will continue to be processed; however, any missing paperwork must be on file by Tuesday, September 16 to be eligible for enrollment for the 2008-2009 school year.
