Civic Leadership ½ credit
This course uses collaborative learning in a strategic partnership with Student Government. Therefore Students will:
- run for office, solve problems and initiate projects or events at their school
- meet the National Standards for Leadership as reported by Student Council Associations.
- attend a fall Leadership Retreat in Washington, DC in December and a spring Leadership Retreat in Harrisburg. Scholarships ($50-$300) are available for both retreats
Note: Students who are interested in Student Government as an extra-curricular activity may participate without enrolling in this class.
In this course, students will also …
- Run for office
- Create campaign posters
- Write a proposal for and participate in a weekly parliamentary session
- Lead and contribute to the Student Government Forum
- Collaborate in a multi-media classroom discussing one of the priorities of Student Government
- Submit a schedule and calendar that reflect short term priorities and goals
- Write a job description for their position
- Introduce a self-funded project utilizing advance money from the Student Government treasury
- Document the project success with a report and interview with a responsible adult
- Recruit others to help with a project
- Participate in the "Students Against Destructive Decisions Event"
- Participate in at least one debate or town hall meeting
- Reach a consensual decision in a group multi-media meeting
- Develop an action plan
- Keep a journal of progress and reflections
