Leadership Testimonials

Student Government and international trips are just two ways we create a context for personal and civic leadership. The stories below are speeches, written by our Senators and the 2008-09 President of the Student Government Organization.

Andrew Hoffmann

Over the past two years, I have been actively involved with the PALCS Student Government. I have been President for both years and have worked hard with other Senators and Officers to accomplish many goals. Over the course of two years, I have helped my school, my community, and myself. When I was working within Student Government, I never thought I was helping anyone other than my school. I never thought about how my work affected the community or myself. Now that I take some time to reflect on it, I realize that my work impacted others more than I knew.

Long ago, back when I was in 8th grade, I was a first year student like everyone else here at PA Leadership Charter School. I remember hearing about an extra curricular activity called Student Government (SG). At first I wasn’t quite sure what to think of this activity, all I know is I only managed to vote the first year. When I got in 9th grade, I started challenging myself to get more involved in things, so eventually I ended up attending some SG committee meetings. Slowly I became more involved and finally in 10th grade I decided that it was time for me to make a difference in the school.

When I came to PA Leadership I viewed school as something I was required to do. A lot of changes were taking place in my life; not the smallest of which being changing schools. I was frightened and beyond apprehensive about what was to come. I had never heard of a cyber school before my mother’s decision to enroll me in the Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School.

The first day of my attendance to PA Leadership was full of mixed emotions. I found myself actually missing my former school and the people that had surrounded me there. I didn’t believe I had made the right choice to go along with this decision. The work was educational enough, but I was still skeptical.

There are so many things that can be done to better the community, school and yourself. I know that there aren’t things that I’ve done that are too big to make a huge different. Though I know that little things can make little differences and little differences build up big differences. With everyone working together, big differences can be accomplished and dreams can be fulfilled. I do what I can as anyone else would want to do to better my community, school and myself.
