Career Awareness

½ credit - Fall or Spring

Career Awareness is the basic Career Course for students in grades 8, 9 and 10 who are beginning to think about the world of work and how they will fit into this matrix in the future.

 

In this course, students will:

  • Begin to look at their interests and values
  • Investigate the sixteen career clusters, by conducting research into those areas of interest 
  • Understand why planning ahead for a career is important and how to design the steps of the career plan
  • Learn how to organize a job search and apply for a job
  • Create a portfolio documenting community service, coursework and other experiences relevant to a future career 

 

Awareness fulfills one of the optional course requirements of achieving the Student Leadership Certificate.

Student Leadership

½ credit - Fall

Students enrolled in this course will learn personal leadership and team building skills. Students will also study and implement the concepts of nutrition, exercise, emotional intelligence, mental focus and group collaboration. 

 

In this course, students will:

  • Attend a four day experiential leadership retreat (approximate cost: $150)
  • Survey their community leaders to discover service project ideas
  • Execute a service project in their local community
  • Document and debrief their service learning experience with mentor interview and presentation software

 

Student Leadership fulfills one of the course requirements of achieving the Student Leadership Certificate.  This course meets the Student Interpersonal Skills Standards from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. It is recommended that students enroll in Student Leadership and Civic Leadership in separate school years.

Civic Leadership

½ credit - Full Year 

leadership

Students enrolled in Civic Leadership will learn organizational leadership skills and partner with the PA Leadership Student Government organization. 

 

In this course, students will:

  • Seek an office in the Student Government organization
  • Work to solve school-related problems, initiate projects and coordinate events including (proms, dances, yearbook, contests, culture, talent shows, and fundraisers) at PA Leadership
  • Attend at least one of two retreats offered in Washington D.C. in December (approximate cost: $150) and Harrisburg in May (approximate cost: $60)
  • Explore skills necessary to manage a non-profit organization

 

Civic Leadership fulfills one of the course requirements of achieving the Student Leadership Certificate. This course meets the Student Interpersonal Skills Standards from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.  It is recommended that students enroll in Student Leadership and Civic Leadership in separate school years.

Career Exploration

Career Exploration is designed to guide students through the career and academic exploration and planning processes, and to provide the strategies and skills necessary for career-related decision making.

 

In this course, students will:

  • Engage in a variety of self-discovery initiatives, exploring personal interests, values and abilities
  • Utilize various questionnaires, assessment and reflection techniques to define and clarify educational and career plans
  • Identify career acquisition and retention skills
  • Engage in career leadership skills
  • Explore the concept of entrepreneurship
  • Create a permanent e-portfolio related to career intentions

 

Career Exploration fulfills one of the optional course requirements of achieving the Student Leadership Certificate.  This course meets the Career Education and Work Standards from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
