Career Awareness 1/2 credit - Fall or Spring 

Career Awareness is the basic Career Course for students in grades 8, 9 and 10 who are beginning to think about the world of work and how they will fit into this matrix in the future. Students will begin to look at their interests and values. They will investigate the sixteen career clusters, by conducting research into those areas of interest. They will understand why planning ahead for a career is important and how to design the steps of the career plan. They will also understand how to organize a job search and how to apply for a job. At the end of the course, students will have a beginning portfolio documenting community service, coursework and other experiences relevant to a future career. This course is considered a career leadership course. It fulfills one of the optional course requirements of achieving the Student Leadership Certificate at graduation.

Career Exploration 1/2 credit - Fall 

Career Exploration 11-12 is designed to guide students through the career and academic exploration and planning processes and to provide the strategies and skills necessary for many years of career-related decision making. Students will engage in a variety of self-discovery initiatives, exploring personal interests, values, abilities as well as questionnaires and other assessments. With this information, students will utilize various assessment and reflection techniques to define and clarify educational and career plans. In addition, several methods of researching academic and career opportunities will be discussed and practiced in class. Throughout the course, students will gather materials relevant to their career intentions, culminating in a permanent e-portfolio. This course is considered a career leadership course. It fulfills one of the optional course requirements of achieving the Student Leadership Certificate at graduation.

Student Leadership 1/2 credit - Fall  

In this course, students will:

  • Attend a mandatory four day experiential leadership retreat (approximate cost: $150) to learn principles of personal leadership and team building
  • Survey their community leaders to discover service project ideas
  • Understand what leadership is and why it begins with the self and moves to others
  • Implement principles of nutrition, exercise, emotional intelligence and mental focus
  • Execute a service project in their local community
  • Document and debrief their service learning experience with mentor interview and presentation software

It fulfills one of the optional course requirements of achieving the Student Leadership Certificate at graduation.

Civic Leadership 1/2 credit - Full Year  

Consensus based learning with a strategic partnership with the school’s Student Government organization.  Students will run for office, solve problems and initiate projects or events at their school.  Students will meet the national standards for leadership as reported by Student Council Associations in managing a non-profit organization.  Students will attend at least one of two retreats offered in Washington D.C. in December (approximate cost: $200) and Harrisburg in May (approximate cost: $60). This course is considered a organizational leadership course. It fulfills one of the optional course requirements of achieving the Student Leadership Certificate at graduation.
