Language Arts K  

In this course, students will:

  • Be exposed to a variety of literature: nonfiction that includes news articles, biographies, research and more; fiction that includes narratives, poems, plays and fantasy
  • Develop phonics skills such as: uppercase and lowercase letter recognition, connecting letter and sound, word blending and reading decodable text
  • Engage in comprehension activities during repeated readings of stories
  • Learn and apply reading strategies such as predicting
  • Develop grade-appropriate skills through the writing process that includes shared independent narrative and informational pieces
  • Use leveled readers to align to weekly skills, reinforce high frequency words, oral vocabulary, beginning phonics and comprehension

In this course, students will:

  • Participate in hands-on and interactive activities that reinforce grade-level math concepts such as counting with one to one correspondence, creating pictographs and learning how to tell time to the hour

In this course, students will:

  • Explore the following units and topics of Science:
    • Life Science – Plants and Animals
    • Earth Science – Land, Water, Weather and Sun
    • Physical Science – Senses, Sorting Objects, Observing Matter, Sound and Movement
  • Participate in hands-on experiments that support lesson concepts such as observing plant growth, modeling animal body structure, exploring the five senses and using online resources for conceptual understanding

In this course, students will:

  • Show progress in their social and emotional development including self-identity, self-control and self-reliance
  • Participate in activities to develop abilities to reason, manage conflict and accept responsibility for behavior
  • Explore and learn from the environment through a variety of experiences that engage student initiative, creativity and curiosity
  • Strengthen social interaction skills such as taking turns, making friends, using please and thank you, engaging with other children and respecting others feelings and rights
  • Enable students’ school success by fostering a home-school-community connection and linking parents and teachers to share information about the child, family and school culture

Art & Music K-1  

Art

  • Initiate curiosity and engagement in learning about Art materials, techniques and processes

  • Use Art materials in a safe and responsible manner

  • Create Art work through color, line, shape and texture

  • Use decision making and problem solving skills in the creation of Art work

  • Understand geometric shapes

  • Be introduced to several famous artists and their works

  • Begin to understand aesthetics and to respect varying opinions

  • Understand that many artists are leaders and that artists contribute to the world in many ways

Music

  • Sing along with folk songs

  • Listen actively to different genres of music

  • Understand musical concepts such as high and low, loud and soft, fast and slow and long and short
  • Respond to music through movement
  • Experience rhythms through body percussion
  • Become familiar with instruments and their different tone colors
  • Begin to use and interpret iconic symbols for musical concepts

         

Art and Music K-1 is a multi-age curriculum spanning two grade levels.

Health, Safety and PE K-1  

In this course, students will:

  • Begin to understand the concept of growth

  • Begin to develop an awareness of the main components of a healthy diet

  • Identify types and causes of common health problems of children

  • Keep a Weekly Activity Journal

  • Be introduced to locomotor/non-locomotor skills

  • Be introduced to manipulatives

  • Be introduced to fitness for health

  • Be introduced to social/emotional skills in a PE setting

All course work is aligned to the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards in Health, Safety and Physical Education. 

Health, Safety and PE K-1 is a multi-age curriculum spanning two grade levels.

Exploring Foreign Language K-1 (optional) 

This is a two-year course, offered as an enrichment option, to expose students to French and Spanish languages and cultures at an early age. Students will be exploring one language for a full year and the other language the following year, in a rotating cycle.

In this course, students will:

  • Be introduced to the Spanish and French languages
  • Begin to learn the sound system of the two languages
  • Learn basic vocabulary such as greetings, colors, food, and family
  • Be introduced to the cultures of the Spanish and French speaking worlds
  • Learn language through song, video, interactive websites, and more

In order to be considered for enrollment, students must be functioning on or above grade level in Language Arts.
