Language Arts 5  

In this course, students will:

  • Read and respond to a variety of literature, including realistic fiction, historical fiction, reader’s theater, tall tales, poetry, myths, plays, fables, fantasy and folktales
  • Read and respond to a variety of nonfiction, including biographies, interviews, photo essays, narrative nonfiction, historical documents, magazine articles, news reports, almanacs, time lines, expeditions and textbooks
  • Reinforce skills and strategies that occur before, during and after reading
  • Use leveled readers to align weekly comprehension skills, reinforce vocabulary and build understanding of connected concepts
  • Develop mastery in using the elements and traits of writing—voice, ideas, organization, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions
  • Practice and incorporate grammatical skills for use in writing

In this course, students will:

  • Solve problems in basic computation and estimation involving fractions, decimals, mixed numbers and whole numbers, geometry, measurement, analysis and probability and algebraic concepts
  • Choose the correct method to solve a given problem
  • Analyze and reinforce topics covered in interactive classrooms
  • Solve problems in computation and estimation involving, but not limited to, place value, decimals, multiplication, division and fractions.
  • Draw conclusions based on graphs, measurement and probability
  • Identify algebraic concepts and interpret number theory

Social Studies 5  

In this course, students will:

  • Develop their understanding of the six themes of geography: Location, Place, Human-Environment Interactions, Movement and Regions

  • Explore the historical events, people and places that shaped life and government in the United States prior to 1824

  • Examine how the nation changed during and after the Civil War

  • Discover how the United States became a world leader in first half of the 20th century, endured inner conflicts thereafter and will face new challenges in the 21st century

Science 5  

In this course, students will:

  • Further understand life science by:
    • Identifying how living things are classified
    • Determining what cells have to do with our lives
    • Explaining how the systems in the human body keep us alive
    • Describing how plants stay alive and produce offspring
    • Recalling how the parts of an ecosystem interact and demonstrating an understanding of how changes in habitats affect living things
  • Build upon their understanding of earth science by:
    • Summarizing how water moves through the environment
    • Explaining why the weather changes
    • Identifying the types of processes that change Earth’s surfaces
    • Discovering the importance of conservation of Earth’s resources
  • Expand upon their understanding of physical science by:
    • Determining what makes up everything around us
    • Exploring how chemistry forces and motion are used in our daily lives
    • Identifying how many types of energy we use each day
    • Modeling an electric current and how it works
  • Expand upon their understanding of space and technology by:
    • Explaining how the study of stars has expanded our knowledge of the universe
    • Analyzing how the motion of objects in space creates cycles
    • Discussing how technology affects our lives
  • Conduct directed and guided experiments to test and illustrate scientific principles

Health, Safety and PE 4-5  

In this course, students will:

  • Develop an understanding of the Food Guide Pyramid and how it relates to a healthy diet

  • Identify factors that influence drug use: Peers, Media, Emotional Health

  • Learn Conflict Resolution skills

  • Maintain a Weekly Activity Journal

  • Develop and reinforce Conditioning Skills and Fitness for Health

  • Develop and reinforce Social/Emotional Skills and Commitment to a Healthy Lifestyle

All course work is aligned to the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards in Health, Safety and Physical Education.

Exploring Art 4-5  

Students will explore:

  • Perception: Understand the elements of art and how they are used along with the principles of design.
  • Creative Expression: Study and create artworks in various media, including portraits, quilts, sculpture, collage and more. Students create artworks inspired by works they learn about, using a variety of materials and techniques.
  • Historical/Cultural Heritage: Investigating artworks from the seven continents, students learn about many styles and periods of art.  Students will gain an understanding of how art reflects the culture or time period in which it is made.
  • Response/Evaluation: A critical and aesthetic response to visual art will be developed.  Students will develop an appreciation for the varying opinions of what defines art; and through this process develop a personal definition.

Exploring Music 4-5  

In this course, students will explore:

  • Notation: Through playing the recorder, students will experience learning and reading standard music notation.
  • Historical/Cultural Heritage: Investigating music from the seven continents, students will learn about many styles and periods of music.  Students will gain an understanding of how music reflects the culture or time period in which it is made.
  • Creative Expression: In this course, students will be challenged to use their own musical interpretations to sing and play expressively.
  • Harmony and Sound: By designing their own musical instrument, students will investigate the nature of sound production.  A basic understanding of harmony will be developed through singing rounds and 2 part songs.

Exploring Technology 5  

In this course, students will:

  • Learn to work with and organize files on a computer
  • Learn safe, efficient strategies for Internet use
  • Discover spreadsheets and use them to display, calculate and analyze data
  • Explore presentation software
  • Explore energy and power, transportation, communication and construction technologies and their impact on our world

Introduction to Foreign Languages (optional) 

In this course, students will:

  • Be introduced to two languages: French and Spanish

  • Learn the sound system of each language and see how the language has impacted English

  • Learn basic greetings, numbers, foods, days of the week, weather, etc.

  • Be introduced to the cultures and communities where the target languages are spoken

  • Compare, contrast, interpret and show comprehension of the cultures by completing a variety of lessons and activities

  • Make voice recordings for submission

In this course, students will:

  • Develop listening, speaking, writing and reading skills through various online lessons, projects and stories in Spanish
  • Learn to appreciate the global Spanish speaking world and how other cultures compare to their own
  • Have an opportunity to use the language in both synchronous chats and voice recordings

In this course, students will:

  • Have an opportunity to use the language in both synchronous chats and voice recordings
  • Learn to appreciate the global French speaking world and how other cultures compare to their own by completing web journeys, maps and letters
  • Develop listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills through various online lessons, projects, and stories in French
  • Make voice recordings for submission

Introduction to French is recommended for students who have never studied a foreign language
