In this course, students will:

- Read and respond to a variety of literature, including realistic fiction, historical fiction, reader’s theater, tall tales, poetry, myths, plays, fables, fantasy and folktales
- Read and respond to a variety of nonfiction, including biographies, interviews, photo essays, narrative nonfiction, historical documents, magazine articles, news reports, almanacs, time lines, expeditions and textbooks
- Reinforce skills and strategies that occur before, during and after reading
- Use leveled readers to align weekly comprehension skills, reinforce vocabulary and build understanding of connected concepts
- Develop mastery in using the elements and traits of writing—voice, ideas, organization, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions
- Practice and incorporate grammatical skills for use in writing
