Child Development 1/2 credit - Fall or Spring  

Students will demonstrate basic comprehension of the information provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for Family and Consumer Science and Child Development.

After successfully completing the course, students should understand the following basic concepts:

  • Observing, studying, and interacting with children
  • Parenting and building strong families
  • Pregnancy and Childbirth
  • Physical, Emotional, Social, and Intellectual development of infants, toddlers, and young children

Food Science 1/2 credit - Fall or Spring

  • Explore the study of processing, preparing, evaluating, packaging, and preserving food.
  • Complete labs to illustrate and identify properties of ingredients

Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation 1/2 credit - Spring  

Career opportunities abound in the hospitality, tourism, and recreation industry.  In this course we examine the different career pathways that are open to individuals, meeting and exceeding customer service, travel and tourism, the lodging industry, culinary arts and restaurants, event planning and management, and recreation and theme park entertainment.  You will be using personal, interpersonal, and communication skills as well as thinking and problem-solving skills in this course.  Balancing work and family life in relation to leisure time and fun, as well as money management and consumerism will be appraised.

After successfully completing this course, student will have a better understanding of the following concepts:

  • Career opportunities in the field of hospitality, tourism, and recreation
  • Customer service
  • Lodging industry service
  • Culinary arts and restaurant service
  • Travel and tourism management and planning
  • Event planning
  • Balancing work and family
