Language Arts 6  

In this course, students will:

  • Explore a variety of genres in literature that includes fictional and non-fictional pieces:
    • Realistic fiction
    • Narrative and expository nonfiction
    • Historical fiction
    • Biographies
    • Poems
    • Readers Theater
    • Short Stories
    • Science fiction
    • Legends/myths
  • Use leveled readers to align weekly comprehension skills, reinforce vocabulary and build understanding of connected concepts
  • Focus on various writing forms, such as persuasive pieces, short stories, poems, plays and multi-paragraph pieces
  • Incorporate writing characteristics, such as organization, voice and theme into their writing
  • Practice and reinforce grammatical skills used in writing

Math 6  

In this course, students will:

  • Solve problems in basic computation and estimation involving fractions, decimals and whole numbers, geometry, measurement and analysis and probability
  • Participate in hands-on and interactive activities that reinforce grade-level math concepts
  • Develop proficiency with problem solving strategies
  • Work towards meeting 8th grade standards in the area of numbers and operations, measurement, geometry, algebraic concepts and data analysis and probability
  • Use words to explain processes of thinking and mathematical procedures involving all areas of the course, especially algebraic concepts, expressions, equations, integers and graphing

Social Studies 6  

In this course, students will:

  • Widen their understanding of the five themes of Geography: Location, Place, Human-Environment Interactions, Movement and Regions

  • Examine the similarities and differences between many societies and cultures

  • Use this knowledge to analyze the geography of world regions and the part it played historically

  • Apply their knowledge of world history and geography to better understand modern life and global interactions

Science 6  

In this course, students will:

  • Build and expand upon the foundations of scientific research, inquiry and experimentation in the areas of Life Science, Physical Science, Earth Science and Space/Technology
  • Conduct directed and guided experiments to test and illustrate scientific principles
  • Use higher level thinking to compare and contrast, make inferences, draw conclusions and test hypotheses in the given themes of the course

Health, Safety and PE 6  

In this course, students will:

  • Choose a healthy lifestyle
  • Identify the 5 Components of Fitness
  • Understand disease prevention
  • Identify the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco and nicotine
  • Maintain a weekly activity journal
  • Reinforce locomotor/non-locomotor skills
  • Reinforce rhythmics and manipulatives
  • Reinforce conditioning skills for health and fitness
  • Reinforce social/emotional skills
  • Reinforce lifetime fitness activities

All course work is aligned to the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards in Health, Safety and Physical Education.

Exploring Art 6  

Students will explore:

  • Use the basic elements of Art and learn principles of design through interactive lessons
  • Review various art media and techniques specific to an Art style
  • Create works of Art with provided Art supplies and tools to express their individual understanding of a concept
  • Recognize and analyze nature, animals, people, places and objects while applying appropriate responses in a specific art vocabulary
  • Identify works of art with an understanding of their cultural and historical significance
  • Develop an informed critical and aesthetic response to visual art
  • Recognize and understand visual art in their surroundings

Exploring Music 6  

In this course, students will:

  • Learn the basic skills and knowledge to express music ideas and concepts
  • Recognize periods of music history within their cultural context
  • Recognize and label musical forms, such as rondo, ABA and theme and variation
  • Study the effects of technology on the creation and distribution of music
  • Study music that tells a story, such as symphonic poems, operas; as well as music that enhances a story, such as film scores
  • This class requires active listening and a large amount of free response writing

Exploring Technology 6  

In this course, students will:

  • Explore the Internet, learn safe guidelines for Internet use, use search engines efficiently, and evaluate the validity of Internet sources
  • Delve into the world of inventors and inventions, learning about the process of inventing and the effect that inventions have on our world
  • Study and apply the design process
  • Learn to use presentation software effectively
  • Explore the effects of various technologies on our world

Introduction to Foreign Language (optional) 

In this course, students will:

  • Be introduced to two languages: French and Spanish
  • Learn the sound system of each language and will be able to see how the language has impacted English
  • Learn basic greetings, numbers, foods, days of the week, weather, etc.
  • Be introduced to the cultures and communities where the target languages are spoken
  • Compare, contrast, interpret and show comprehension of the cultures by completing a variety of lessons and activities

Elementary Spanish (optional) 

In this course, students will:

  • Be introduced to the Spanish sound system
  • Develop listening, speaking, writing and reading skills through various online lessons, projects and stories in Spanish
  • Learn to appreciate the global Spanish speaking world and how other cultures compare to their own

Middle School Spanish A (optional) 

In this course, students will:

  • Be introduced to the Spanish language
  • Learn vocabulary and phrases to express themselves on the subjects of friendship, school, sports, food and leisure activities
  • Discover the culture of Spanish-speaking countries
  • Practice beginning grammar concepts through interactive games and activities
  • Develop necessary skills to listen, read, write and speak at a basic level

Elementary French (optional) 

In this course, students will:

  • Be introduced to the French sound system
  • Have an opportunity to use the language in both a synchronous chat and in voice recordings
  • Learn to appreciate the global French speaking world and how other cultures compare to their own by completing web journeys, maps and letters
  • Develop listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills through various online lessons, projects, and stories in French

Middle School French A (optional) 

This is an introductory level French class. Students can expect 2-4 lessons per week and should plan to spend roughly 2 hours a week on the course. Students will learn how to record their voice and will be expected to do frequent recordings.

 

In this course, students will:

  • Learn basic structures and vocabulary to be able to describe themselves and others
  • Learn about French culture and the country of France
  • Learn about areas in the world where French is spoken
