Language Arts Math Social Studies Science Art & Music Health/Safety/PE

 


Language Arts 2  

In this course, students will:

  • View a variety of fiction and non-fiction literature, including: news articles, biographies, research, narratives, plays, poems and fantasy
  • Reinforce phonics skills by connecting letters to sounds, working with word patterns and word building
  • Learn how to improve fluency with repeated readings of stories
  • Develop comprehension reading strategies before, during and after reading
  • Increase high-frequency word recognition by reading and reviewing words weekly
  • Use known letter-sounds to spell words
  • Develop tier-two words by building robust vocabulary
  • Learn and utilize the writing process to develop writing forms such as: personal narratives, letters, descriptive, informational and research report
  • Learn, practice, and incorporate grammatical skills for use in writing
  • Work with leveled readers to reinforce high-frequency words, vocabulary, phonics, comprehension strategies and fluency

Math 2  

In this course, students will:

  • Explore, review and practice the following concepts:
    • Numbers and Operations – Numbers to 100, Tables and Graphs, Adding and Subtracting Strategies
    • 2-Digit Addition and Subtraction
    • Money, Time and Data – Counting and Using Money, Telling and Understanding Time, Probability
    • Geometry and Patterns – Plane Shapes, Solid Figures and Patterns
    • Measurement and Fractions – Customary and Metric Measurements
    • Exploring Greater Numbers and Operations – Numbers to 1,000, Introducing Multiplication and Division
  • Participate in hands-on and interactive activities that reinforce math concepts
  • Develop math vocabulary

Social Studies 2  

In this course, students will:

  • Learn about how families have changed over time. They will learn about special people who we remember for the important work they have done and also visit places near and far
  • Develop their understanding of the five major themes of Geography
  • Be provided with the necessary tools to develop into thoughtful and caring citizens as they view examples of citizens of good character
  • Develop social studies vocabulary

Science 2  

In this course, students will:

  • Explore the following units and topics of Science:
    • Life Science – Plants, Animals, Living Things Growing and Changing
    • Earth Science – Earth’s Weather & Seasons, Earth’s Land, Air, and Water, Fossils and Dinosaurs
    • Physical Science – Matter, Energy, Forces and Motion and Sound
    • Space and Technology – Earth and Space, Technology in Our World
  • Ask and answer scientific questions by participating in inquiry activities and experiments
  • Review biographies, careers, and a NASA Connection in all units
  • Develop science vocabulary

Art & Music 2-3  

Art

  • Continue to sing along with folk songs, in particular American folk songs
  • Experience rhythms through body percussion and communicate the experience effectively
  • Identify instruments, instrument families and their different tone colors
  • Begin to understand standard music notation
  • Listen and respond to different genres of music
  • Describe musical concepts such as high and low, loud and soft, fast and slow and long and short.
  • Discriminate between steps, skips, leaps and repeated notes
  • Use different media to communicate ideas, experiences and stories
  • Understand creating differences in color values by adding white or black to primary colors
  • Identify characteristics that make artwork unique
  • Identify connections between the visual arts and other subjects
  • Identify specific works of art as belonging to a particular culture, time and place
  • Demonstrate how history, culture and visual arts can influence each other in making and studying works of Art
  • Understand aesthetic preferences and the importance of respecting the preferences of others
  • Describe how peoples’ experiences influence their Art
  • Understand that many artists are leaders and that artists contribute to the world in many ways

Music

  • Continue to sing along with folk songs, in particular American folk songs
  • Listen and respond to different genres of music
  • Describe musical concepts such as high and low, loud and soft, fast and slow and long and short.
  • Identify instruments, instrument families and their different tone colors
  • Experience rhythms through body percussion and communicate the experience effectively
  • Begin to use and interpret standard music notation
  • Identify and perform simple rhythm patterns
  • Discriminate between steps, skips, leaps and repeated notes
  • Participate in the creative process of making music (composing)
  • Understand that music can tell a story

Health, Safety and PE 1-3  

In this course, students will:

  • Become aware of the Decision-Making process
  • Recall procedures and rules for safety in Emergency situations
  • Maintain a Weekly Activity Journal
  • Be introduced to, develop and reinforce Locomotor/Non-locomotor skills
  • Be introduced to, develop and reinforce Rhythmics and Manipulatives
  • Be introduced to, develop and reinforce conditioning skills
  • Be introduced to, develop and reinforce healthy lifestyle concepts and skills

All course work is aligned to the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards in Health, Safety and Physical Education.

Health, Safety and PE 1-3 is a multi-age curriculum spanning three grade levels.
